The Ritual of Breath Is the Rite to Resist landed in New York City with a month-long series of community activations and a free performance of the opera, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of Eric Garner’s killing. The opera made it's NYC debut on July 19, 2024 on the outdoor stage of Lincoln Center’s Summer for the City Festival.
NYC Community Activations
Throughout the summer of 2024, we co-hosted over 20 community activations with civic partners across the five boroughs of New York City, including Staten Island where Eric Garner lived and died. These activations spoke to the root causes of systemic injustice that impacted the lives of Eric Garner and his daughter Erica. They offered Black and non-Black communities alike spaces to center collective wellness, ancestral healing and an ongoing commitment to the value and sanctity of Black lives.
